Directors and Assistant Directors - Pilot Performance & Achievement Conversations

Colleagues,

I am pleased to advise that proposal for the launch of a pilot the Agile Performance Framework (branded Performance & Achievement Conversations) has recently been approved by CLT. This is great news given the current climate we find ourselves operating in as a result of the current pandemic. As managers have to contend and adapt to challenges such as competing demands, changes to service delivery, and the prevalence of managing teams remotely, the approach presents an excellent opportunity to introduce an initiative to help managers to consistently focus on supporting, engaging and developing their staff to meet their potential and to perform to the best of their ability.

Agile performance is a key element of the ‘developing our talent’ theme of the Organisational Development Strategy and will have a positive impact on the overall EA business planning process and delivery of business objectives, which cascade to an individual level.  The two key features of the approach are regular monthly check-ins and the coaching skills of the manager. Many high performing managers will already adopt aspects of this approach, however, it will be important for leaders at all levels to adopt and role model this in order to build a high performance culture.

Summary of Pilot Roll Out:

Stage 1:

• Performance & Achievement Conversations will be piloted with Directors and Assistant Directors as reviewers from October 2020 (using specific adapted paperwork for this group)
• This will be reviewed over a three month period to inform the next stage

Stage 2:

• Performance & Achievement Conversations will be introduced to Heads of Service and reviewers from January 2021 onwards
• This will continue to be reviewed and any recommendations will be explored to inform further roll out of Performance & Achievement Conversations within EA.

Scheduled training for Performance & Achievement Conversations:

A key element of Performance & Achievement Conversations is the half day virtual training programme (delivered via MS Teams) which includes coaching skills for high performance. It therefore important that managers complete this training. Recognising the demand on your time, a selection of four dates are available for Directors and Assistant Directors to choose from:

1. Please indicate the session you would like to book on by 30 September 2020 by clicking on your chosen date below.
2. Heads of service will receive information from us regarding stage 2 of the pilot in due course.  However, I would be grateful if you could brief them regarding their role as a Performance & Achievement Conversations reviewer from January 2021.
