Presenter: Dr Geraldine Magennis-Clarke, Senior Lecturer in Education and Literacy - St Mary’s University College
Dr Geraldine Magennis-Clarke from St Mary's University College leads this session looking at the various components within Scarborough's Reading Rope model that need to be solid to support a reading for pleasure culture.
Scarborough’s Reading Rope model was published in 2001 in the Handbook of Early Literacy Research (Neuman/Dickinson). The model illustrates the two major strands that are woven together for a child to become a skilled reader: language comprehension and word recognition.
Dr Magennis-Clarke will discuss the need to cultivate children’s independence in reading through the use of read alouds, oral reading fluency practice and whole class novels.
